The Walled City or (Pol) houses buildings with richly carved
woodwork and stone facades. Its huge gate gives a glimpse of beautiful
ancient 18th century buildings.
The SatyAhmedabadha Ashram (now known as the Gandhi Ashram) was
the centre for the Indian freedom struggle and was set-up in 1920 AD.
The Dandi March called by Mahatma Gandhi in 1930 started from here.
'Hridaya Kunj', a simple cottage where Gandhi lived, is located
beside the ashram and is now preserved as a national monument. A Gandhi
Memorial Centre, a library and a sound-and-light show displaying the
Mahatma's life and work are some other interesting attractions of this
Ashram.
The Jama Masjid is one of the most striking mosques in India. It
has 15 domes resting atop 260 pillars. The beautiful stonework of the
Muluk-Khana or the Royal Gallery is another major attraction here.
The Hathee Singh Temple is built in pure white marble. With 52
shrines, each of which has an image of a Jain Tirthankar, this two-storied
structure is dedicated to Dharmanath, the fifteenth Jina or Jain apostle.
The Shaking Minaret or Jhulta Minar is famed for its curiously
built minarets where if one of the minarets is shaken, the other one begins
to vibrate on its own. The mechanism is still a mystery, but it is believed
that it is a precaution against earthquakes.
The Mosque of Sidi Sayid is famed for its stone tracery and motifs
of banyan trees on its windows. Women are not allowed inside this mosque.
The Kankaria Lake is a circular lake constructed in 1451 AD with
an island garden and summer palace known as Nagina Wadi at its
centre. Its lush green parks, aquarium, boat club, natural historical
museum, and zoo make it a great picnic spot.
The Calico Museum houses designs, prints, and design blocks from
all over the world. It also has a collection of marble, sandstone and
bronze icons and busts split in two thematic sections-galleries for religious
and historical textiles.
The Bhadra Fort with the Teen Darwaza is the venue for Republic
Day and Independence Day celebrations in the city. The fort has a temple
devoted to the Mother Goddess, Bhadrakali. Once, the huge and grand Teen
Darwaza (Triple Gateway) was the royal entrance to the Royal Square of
the Bhadra Fort.
The other places worth visiting in Ahmedabad are Rani Rupmati’s and
Rani Sipri’s Mosques, Raj Babri Mosque, the Kite Museum,
Shreyas Museum of Folk Art and Utensil Museum.
There are also many tourist spots such as the Nalsarovar Sanctuary,
Lothal, Modhera and small village of Mahudi near
Ahmedabad.
