Situated amid the Eastern Himalayas, Arunachal Pradesh is the largest state in northeast India. More than half of its area is covered with forests and it shares its boundaries with Bhutan, Tibet, China and Myanmar and, Assam and Nagaland. It has a fascinating variety of truly exotic flora and fauna. For instance, it is the only state that is home to the four major cats-tiger, leopard, clouded leopard and snow leopard-as well as lesser feline species like the golden cat and marbled cat.

The white-winged duck, sclater monal and Bengal floricans are a few of them. It is also the richest state as far as variety and density of pheasant population is concerned. Besides this, seven species of primates including the takin are found only in Arunachal Pradesh. No wonder then, that a stay amidst these beautiful, rare creatures that are on the brink of extinction, fills one with a sense of reverence and awe.
The state also has an equally rich variety of reptiles, amphibia and fish. Pythons and snakes are easy to spot in the lush forests of its temperate zone. There are also a large number of national parks and sanctuaries where strict rules for preservation of rare fauna are followed.

The capital city of Itanagar is home to the magnificent Ita Fort, built in the fourteenth century by King Ramchandra of Mayapur. The ancient temple at Mallini Than, is a unique site belonging to the 10th and 12th century. It consists of sculptures of gods and goddesses of the Hindu iconographic school. Parasuram Kund and the Brahma Kund in the Lohit district are sacred places that attract thousands of pilgrims, who take a dip in their holy waters to purge themselves of their sins every year. Bismaknagar and its fort in the Dibang Valley are memorials to the Bhagwat Gita. The story goes that Lord Krishna’s visited Bismaknagar, fell in love with a local girl Rukmini, and eloped with her.
The beautiful Tawang Monastery, dating back to the 17th century, houses a big library of holy books, some of which are written in gold letters. Such historical sites apart, Arunachal Pradesh also has a large number of beautiful picnic spots at various altitudes, where one can relax in a clean and fresh environment.
