There are several travel agencies
operating in Belur. As a leading travel agency in Belur we take
you around Belur and cover its various tourist sites.
Some of the important tourist
sites in Belur are:
The Chennakeshava Temple is the most important place to visit in
Belur. The erstwhile Hoysala rulers built it in AD 1116 to commemorate
their victory over the Cholas at Talkad. This temple is located
on the banks of Yagachi River and is one of the finest surviving
examples of Hoysala sculpture and architecture. The outer walls
of this temple are decorated with low friezes, which are incomparable
in detail and artistry. These friezes generally depict scenes from
Hindu epics like Ramayana, Mahabharata and the Bhagvat Purana, apart
from figures of gods and goddesses, amorous maidens, animals and
mythological figures.
Each part of the temple, including the walls, the pillars and even
the brackets are richly decorated with carvings. However, Hoysala
sculpture reaches its apogee in the representation of celestial
maidens, carved with a marvelous plasticity of modeling and filled
with the most accomplished grace and elegance.
Pillars in the Navranga Hall are ingeniously carved and marvelously
smooth. An interesting aspect of this hall is that no two pillars
are alike and each one of them is a masterpiece in its own right.
The hall is created in accordance with the overall diamond-shaped
plan with entrances on the east, north, and south. The ceiling is
made up of concentric rings ornamented with figures. The temple,
which is located within the precincts of a paved compound, also
has a tank that is used for ritual bathing.
As all other Hoysala shrines, the most striking feature of the temples
in Belur is that they are raised on a high, star-shaped jagati (platform)
on which the edifice has been built.
The Chennakeshava Temple is open for all but non-Hindus are not
allowed inside the sanctum sanctorum. The huge walled court of the
Chennakeshava Temple houses four smaller temples within its precincts:
the Channigaraya Temple, the Soumyanayaki Temple, the Andal Temple
and the Veeranarayana Temple, all of which are decorated with rich
carvings and sculptures.
Further ahead from Belur excursion to Halebid, Chikmangalur, Hassan
and Sravanbelgola are excellent options.
Halebid is the ancient capital of the erstwhile Hoysala rulers and
is located at a distance of 17 km from Belur. The main places of
tourist interest in Halebid are the Dwarasamudra Lake, the Hoysalesvara
temple, Archaeological Museum and a few Jain temples.
The small town of Chikmagalur (north-west of Belur) is around half
an hour’s drive from Belur and is known for its Hoysala temple,
apart from a few mosques, a fort and St Joseph’s Cathedral.
Hassan is situated at a distance of 38 km from Belur. The District
Museum and the Maharaja Park are the only places worth visiting
