No visit to Darjeeling is complete without a visit to the famous Yiga Choeling Monastery that dominates the hillock of Ghoom. The monastry belongs to the yellow hat sect and has a 4.5-meter tall image of the Maitreya Buddha. Built in 1850, the gaily-painted monastery contains several ancient palm leaf and paper manuscripts in Tibetan script. The highest railway station in the world is also situated nearby.

Tiger Hill is a popular picnic spot that has earned international fame for its magnificent view of sunrise over Kanchenjunga and other Great Eastern Himalayan peaks.

Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park is a high-altitude wildlife park. It is the only center in India for the breeding of the rare snow leopard.

Observatory Hill is situated above the Windamere Hotel. There's a magnificent Kali shrine nearby. Both Hindus and Buddhists attach great religious importance to the Observatory Hill.

Dhirdam Temple is built on the style of the famous Pashupatinath temple of Kathmandu (Nepal). Monks of the Aloobaari Monastery sell Tibetan and Sikkimese handicrafts and religious objects (usually hand bells).

The colourful Bhutia Bustee Monastery has the spectacular backdrop of the Kanchenjunga. An old library of Buddhist texts is also present here.

The quaint narrow-gauge Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, popularly called the ‘Toy Train’ is a miniature steam engine hauling four to six little blue coaches with large windows. The train winds its way through forests and waterfalls and provides a series of spectacular views of the Darjeeling valley.
