The famous Ajanta caves are located to the northeast of Aurangabad. These consist of 29 caves in a horseshoe formation on the steep rocky gorge that rises above the river Waghore. They date from about 200 BC to 650 AD. They remained unknown for centuries, till, in 1819, soldiers from a British hunting party re-discovered them.
The Ellora caves are a group of 34 caves about 30 kilometers northwest of Aurangabad. They are also cut into the hillside and are famed for their sculptures. Though the earliest caves are Buddhist, the later ones are Hindu and Jain cave temples.
