The tiny state of Tripura nestles in the extreme corner of the Indian subcontinent. Bound by Bangladesh in the north, west and south, and by Assam and Mizoram in the east, Tripura lives in blessed beauty and peace. Despite being endowed with immense natural beauty, virgin forests, lush valleys and a colourful cultural-historical heritage that has preserved its exquisite craft traditions, the tourist potential of Tripura lies unexplored. Which is all very well for the discerning, for a trip to its peaceful and pristine locales is a welcome change from the increasingly crowded hill stations in the other states of the country.
Since Tripura never came under British supervision and maintained its autonomy as a princely state ruled by a Maharaja until the time of independence, it never became a 'fashionable' winter resort like Shillong (in Meghalaya) or Shimla (in Himachal Pradesh). However, in an attempt to boost the tourist potential of the state, the state government has given tourism the status of an industry. Prominent places of tourist importance are Agartala, Unakoti, Pilak, Udaipur, Tripurasundari Temple, Ujjayanta Palace, Neermahal, Jampui Hill, Bhavaneswari Temple, Sepahijala, Kamalasagar, Deotamura, and Dumboor Lake.
Buddhist monasteries in Agartala, Pecharthal, Kanchanpur, Manu Bakul, Pilak and Boxnagar have a quaint untouched charm. A visit to one of the innumerable orchards and groves of orange, cashew nut, jackfruit, coconut, tea can be a heady experience. And witnessing the Mog community's Way (Lamp) Festival from the full moon of Ashad to the full moon of Ashwin, the Boat Race festival and the Orange and Tourism Festival can be a wonderful and exciting way of imbibing the folk and tribal culture of the state.
Tripura's art and craft tradition has much to offer in terms of souvenirs and handicraft items. The work is dominantly tribal in character and has an esoteric look and feel. Palm-leaf handicraft products exclusive to Tripura are popular outside the state. Tripura's bamboo and cane furniture and other products, together with ethnic artifacts exceptionally famous.
